About Danielle

| Vancouver Island Regional Youth Representative |

My name is Danielle and I am Cree Métis. My family comes most recently from Duck Lake, Saskatchewan. I was born and raised on Lekwungen territory in Victoria BC, and I have lived there all my life. I attended UVic, where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Health and Community Services with distinction in June of 2016. During my education I took a wide variety of courses across the sciences and humanities, before I discovered that my passion is indigenous public health. I completed a focus area for my degree in indigenous health and I also was awarded the Jamie Cassels Undergraduate Research Award, which afforded me the opportunity to work with a researcher to study the impacts of HIV supportive housing services in Western Canada.

I am currently working for the Ministry of Health under the Public Service’s Aboriginal Youth Internship Program. My career goals include completing a Master’s Degree in Public Health and gaining a permanent position in a public health role.

I have been involved with my local Métis association, the Métis Nation of Greater Victoria, for a few years now. I began as secretary on the board of directors, and gradually became more involved in community events and planning throughout the years. Being involved with the board of directors has given me the excellent opportunity to gain more skills and knowledge. It has also allowed me to become more grounded in local governance issues and health and community issues that affect women and youth.

In my spare time, I enjoy making Métis crafts. These include making moccasins, jewelry, and beadwork. I really love Métis and Cree beadwork and when I practice it I feel like I am grounded and connected to my culture. My goals are to expand and challenge my artistic abilities by learning how to finger and loom weave a Métis sash, and to begin to market my artwork and Métis crafts for sale online. I am also working on learning more about my Cree and Métis cultures and my own family’s history.

I decided to run as MNBC’s Region 1 youth representative this year because I wanted to become more involved in provincial Métis programs and events geared towards youth. I am passionate about supporting youth in the community and helping them meet whatever their personal goals are, whether that is school, work, or personal.

Please feel free to reach out to me. I would love to get to know you a bit better!
